Award Winning Environmental Schemes at The Belfry

The Belfry welcomes recycling initiatives
The European Tour encourages all venues to adopt an environmentally friendly approach to championship events, with The Belfry Hotel in the Midlands being one of the pioneer venues.
A benchmark for golfing resorts, The Belfry has always been at the forefront of the golf and hotel industry’s eco initiatives and is currently implementing an environmental programme for the Quinn Insurance British Masters. The aim is to reduce the event’s carbon footprint by minimising resource consumption and waste, avoiding pollution and protecting the local wildlife, including four bird species which are listed by the RSPB as being in decline.
In addition, all paper and wood used at the Quinn Insurance British Masters will be recycled afterwards and there will be recycling bins placed throughout the public areas to ensure visitors can do their bit while attending the event. Outside, there are on-site herb gardens for the kitchens which will be used in hospitality during the event week, while waste water from the hotel is treated at the resort’s on-site treatment centre, recycled and used to irrigate the resort’s three golf courses. Within the hotel itself, low energy lightbulbs are standard, all cardboard and glass is separated for recycling, and general waste is compacted to reduce collections. Furthermore, an outreach programme sees local schools regularly invited for tours to learn how businesses can be environmentally aware.
Kenny Mackay, Head Greenkeeper says: “At The Belfry we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. We work closely with the Environment Agency, Warwickshire County Council, Myerscough College and European Tour to ensure best practice is maintained. In 2007 we achieved several awards including commendations from the green keeping association, BIGGA, and a Regional Excellence in Tourism for sustainable tourism.”
The Belfry will see many of Europe’s top golfers compete against Lee Westwood at this year’s Quinn Insurance British Masters at the famous resort in the Midlands. The tournament takes place from the 25th to 28th September when the stars of the golf world will all be competing for the £1.8 million prize fund.
