Simon Wakefield confirms play

Simon Wakefield confirms his place at The Belfry
Life long Port Vale supporter Simon has announced his attendance at the Quinn Insurance British Masters and is relishing the challenge of a battle against a world class field, including current champion Lee Westwood. The prize up for grabs is from a fund of £1.8million and the tournament returns to The Belfry in the West Midlands from 25th to 28th September.
Since turning pro in 1997, Newcastle-under-Lyme born Simon has enjoyed several wins including the European Challenge Tour’s Tessali Open del Sud in Italy in 2002. His biggest win to date came in 2005 when he won the Dimension Data Pro-Am on South Africa’s Sunshine Tour, a tournament previously won by Ryder Cup stars Darren Clarke and US Masters winner Trevor Immelman.
Most recently Simon, 34, finished runner-up to Jeev Milkha Singh at the Bank of Austria Open with a score of 14 under.
Simon, who took up golf at the age of 15 and cut his handicap from 26 to 12 in his first season, has sporting pedigree in the blood; his uncle Bob Taylor is a former England Test Wicketkeeper.
Speaking ahead of the Quinn Insurance British Masters, Wakefield said: “I am delighted to be a part of this year’s Battle of the Brabazon. After my strong performance at the Open Championship in July I am confident I can be a strong contender at the Quinn Insurance British Masters.”
Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler, Managing Director of event promoters International Sports Management said; “Simon proved at Royal Birkdale that he can perform well against the best players in the world. Starting the final day of a major championship in fourth position is a huge test of character and it’s only a matter of time before Simon wins his maiden European Tour title. I’m sure he’ll be a force at the Quinn Insurance British Masters.”
