10 Reasons not to miss The Quinn Insurance British Masters

Fri, 12 Sep 2008 - 09:00 GMT

Top of the list - 2007 champion Lee Westwood
Our British boys – With Lee Westwood returning to defend his 2007 title, fans’ favourite Darren Clarke, legend Colin Montgomerie and former Ryder Cup star David Howell already confirmed to play, let’s hope that Britain triumphs in the Battle of the Brabazon for the second year running.

Young Guns – Ryder Cup team member Oliver Wilson, Nick Dougherty, Pablo Larrazabal and Rory McIIroy, who made his professional debut at the Quinn Insurance British Masters last year at the age of only 18, are definitely all worth watching at this year’s tournament.  Twenty year old Chris Wood, who turned professional a week after claiming the silver medal at The Open in July, has also announced he will make his Quinn Insurance British Masters debut this year and will be looking for a good result to secure his Tour card for 2009.

Celebrity spotting – Welsh rugby star Jonathan Davies and TV & radio presenter Vernon Kay will be playing in the Pro-Am on Wednesday 24th September as guests of Jaguar. Joining them will be former Olympic athlete Jonathan Edwards, rugby player Rob Jones, chat show host Jeremy Kyle and BBC commentators Paul Eales and Will Greenwood, so get to The Belfry for some shameless star spotting.

That good, unpredictable weather – Last year’s event saw rain, shine and everything in between. But isn’t the changing British weather all part of the British Masters’ charm…? Plus, changes in conditions only serve to push players to their limits, making it all the more interesting for the spectators.

Pink Friday – a rose tinted hue will sweep the golf course on Ladies’ Day, Friday 26th September – all Quinn Insurance British Masters staff, marshals, media and even players are being encouraged to wear pink or sport a pink ribbon in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer – causes close to golfer Darren Clarke after he lost his wife, Heather, to breast cancer in 2006.

Ladies’ Day – Ladies’ Day, sponsored by prestigious watchmaker Audemars Piguet, is a fantastic reason to come and enjoy the Quinn Insurance British Masters. With a ‘Best Dressed’ competition being guest judged by Darren Clarke and exclusive prizes up for grabs from Audemars Piguet, this is guaranteed to draw in the female spectators, which is great news for all you girl fans and equally as pleasing for the men! Plus the first fifty ladies through the gates on Friday 26th September will be granted free entry to the tournament and all ladies can enter a free draw to win prizes from The Belfry Spa and Moët and Chandon.

The Tented Village – There’s plenty to entertain you in addition to the golf with an exciting EA Sports hub, fun Golf Foundation junior golf area for kids and pro lessons on the inflatable driving range. There are also fantastic prizes to be won at the putting green and on the longest drive simulator for budding golfers plus delicious food and drinks so you can get in the swing.

Golf’s fashion setters – With all those pro golfers vying for the spotlight, it will be more than the golf that catches your eye – the outfits are often as entertaining.

It’s all for a good cause – The tournament’s official charity, The Anthony Nolan Trust, will be fundraising throughout the event in the Tented Village and raising money for those affected by Leukaemia. For more information about the charity, visit their website at www.anthonynolantrust.org.uk.   On Friday 26th September as part of Ladies’ Day, special fundraising activities will also take place for Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

A chance to tone up - You could walk up to 5 miles without even realising it if you follow your favourite golfer around the full 18 holes. A day of enjoyable spectating with some calorie burning thrown in – a perfect golfing outing!
