Great Scots Announce Decision To Play At The Quinn Direct British Masters

Wed, 19 Apr 2006 - 02:36 GMT

Colin Montgomerie & Paul Lawrie in relaxed mood
Four great Scottish golfers, Colin Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie, Sandy Lyle and Andrew Coltart have announced they will be teeing off at The Quinn Direct British Masters and competing for this year’s coveted trophy and a share of the £1.8 million prize fund.

The announcement adds a strong Scottish contingency and four more Ryder Cup stars to the growing list of world-class players already confirmed to play at The De Vere Belfry in May. Montgomerie has been a long established key member of the European Ryder Cup team and ended the 2005 season by returning once again at the top of the Order of Merit. Sandy Lyle has been named as one of Ian Woosnam’s assistant captains for The 36th Ryder Cup at The K Club in Ireland this September, marking his return to the Ryder Cup fold for the first time since 1987, two years after lifting the famous Open Championship Claret Jug at Royal St George in 1985. The two younger Scots, Paul Lawrie and Andrew Coltart both made their Ryder Cup debuts in 1999, the year that Lawrie famously came from 10 shots behind to win the Open Championship at Carnoustie after a three-man play-off

Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, Managing Director of promoters International Sports Management said; “This is an exciting announcement and the Scottish line up adds even more strength to the event. It will be a thrilling tournament and one that promises to offer top quality golf from beginning to end.”

Colin Montgomerie said: “It’s great to see such a strong field lining up for The Quinn Direct British Masters and especially such a strong Scottish contingent. I have good memories of playing at The Belfry and looking forward to returning there.”
