Woosnam And Torrance Join Global Elite For Quinn Direct British Masters

Thu, 27 Apr 2006 - 02:35 GMT

Belfry Bliss - Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam crack open the champagne to celebrate victory in the 1985 Ryder Cup at the De Vere Belfry
Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam, the legendary Ryder Cup duo, have announced they will be competing for this year’s Quinn Direct British Masters.

The De Vere Belfry will bring back fond memories for Sam Torrance as, under his captaincy, the 2002 European Ryder Cup team clinched the title at the world famous Brabazon course. The 2006 European team captain, Ian Woosnam, will hope to replicate Sam’s success when his team take on the mighty Americans at The K Club, Dublin, in September.

Commenting on his participation in The Quinn Direct British Masters Ian Woosnam said “The Tournament will be an important platform for the European Ryder Cup hopefuls to showcase their talents and earn valuable qualifying points for the team. I’m looking forward to competing alongside such a great group of golfers.”

European Ryder Cup teammates from 2004 Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke, David Howell, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter have already committed to The Quinn Direct British Masters, raising the stakes higher in the bid for the coveted title and a share of the £1.8 million prize fund.

Defending champion Thomas Bjorn has confirmed he will be competing alongside his former 2002 Ryder Cup compatriots Niclas Fasth and Phillip Price. Scotsmen Andrew Coltart and Paul Lawrie also bring their former Ryder Cup team experience to the Tournament.

Swedish star Henrik Stenson is fighting for a rookie place on the European team alongside last year’s European Open winner Kenneth Ferrie and Nick Dougherty, who won his maiden European Tour title at the 2005 Singapore Masters.

Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, Managing Director of promoters International Sports Management said;  “The current line up of world class players will make The Quinn Direct British Masters very exciting for spectators and participants alike. I can’t wait to see how the Tournament unfolds.”
